MAKE MATERIALS MATTER paints a portrait of the Danish architect Søren Pihlmann and his ‘circular architecture’. Here, ‘circular’ refers to a circular economy in construction, where materials are reused. In 2025, Pihlmann converted the Danish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, using only materials he found within the exhibition building and its foundations.

How can we build in the future when resources will become increasingly scarce, yet climate targets must still be met? The global construction and property sector is responsible for almost 40% of total climate-damaging CO2 emissions. It is time to rethink architecture and construction.
