Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo), a lawyer in Cincinnati, is contacted by farmers from West Virginia who accuse the DuPont plant of disposing of toxic waste. Their fields have been destroyed, their livestock has perished. Bilott files a complaint – the beginning of a 15-year legal battle that not only puts a strain on his health and livelihood, but also on his family. The film is based on true events.

A documentary on this topic. ‘How to Poison a Planet’, will be shown at Filmmuseum Potsdam on 23 May at 17:00.

Todd Haynes is an award-winning American director, screenwriter and producer. With films such as ‘Carol’, ‘I'm Not There’ and ‘May December’, he is one of the most influential voices in US cinema. In 2025, he was president of the International Jury of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
